Pappy, I enjoy seeing these early Archie comics Betty and Veronica included where the characters have yet to morph into the sacharinistic stereotypes that have virtually dominated their comics for the past several decades. Realizing that back in "the day" when "teen comics" were rampant, and dozens of teenaged characters were vying for kids' dimes at the news-stand, it is interesting to speculate now, that when once there were so many different teen comics, now I can't think of anything today that could be likened to the teen comic genre. Now, with Archie comics odd turn attempting to keep relevant, what with gay characters and the impending "death" of Archie, it ain't what it used to be!
While of course we here at Comic Book Resources would never advocate for actual censorship, there are certainly quite a few grim, gruesome and lewd moments in this bold new Archie era that are a far cry from the formerly very G-rated digests. The classic comic series by Bill Watterson based around a simple story about a boy and his imaginary tiger is, of course, entertaining, but unfortunately the comics are often likened to just that. Calvin and Hobbes remains of primary interest to children. In truth, Calvin and Hobbes has become the focus of some academic analysis, as the character of six-year-old precocious Calvin is actually wise beyond his years, pondering on issues such as the environment, current events, education, and greater existentialist issues that humans have been faced with since time immemorial.
Archie Andrews is so hot right now. Veronica Lodge wasn't far behind Betty, and debuted four issues later as the new girl in Riverdale that all the boys were falling over themselves to impress. While she can be cold and occasionally mean Veronica is never cruel, and when it comes down to what really matters, she does truly care about Archie.
